Feeling crunched

I want to be doing more with my photography, and starting my own portrait business has been a dream of mine for a long time. I've been shy about talking about it with people because I've always been afraid that they are thinking that my photos aren't good enough for that. So what do I do, say "damnit, full speed ahead!" and hope people will come? I am starting to feel like I've been wasting time and need to get on it. It's hard, though, when I have a limited circle of friends to help me spread the word.
